Refund Policy

Refunds for Open-Enrollment Courses
If you withdraw from an open-enrollment course within two months of the original date of enrollment and have not turned in any lessons, you are eligible for a partial refund. An administrative fee of $75 per course is charged. Seventy-five percent of the course fees and handling, less the administrative fee, is refundable if we receive a request for refund AND the returned course materials within ONE MONTH of the original date of enrollment. Fifty percent of the course fees and handling, less the administrative fee, is refundable if we receive a request for refund AND the returned course materials within TWO MONTHS of the original enrollment date. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POLICY.

We will make no refunds after two months from the original enrollment date. We will make no refunds if any lessons have been submitted to Independent Learning for grading. The student must return the syllabus, stationery and any other course materials in order to be eligible for a refund.

If the textbooks are returned in excellent condition we will refund 50 percent of the original cost of the texts, provided they are currently being used in the course for which they were issued. Shrink wrap textbooks do not apply to this policy and no refunds are granted. The student should plan on at least a four-week processing time for the refund check. If the syllabus is returned in damaged condition, written in, etc., a $25 replacement fee will be assessed. A “W” will appear on your transcript for each course withdrawal.

Refund policy for semester-based courses
Refund deadlines match the campus calendar. If you drop before Sept. 2 in Fall, you will receive a 100 percent refund. For specific refund dates for each semester, please visit: www.ss.unr.edu/records/cal.asp.

Textbook refunds for semester-based courses
The Independent Learning office does not buy back textbooks or other materials for semester-based courses. Students wishing to sell their books at the end of the semester should call or drop by the ASUN Bookstore located on campus in the Student Union for more information: (775) 784-6597.

Transfer policy
Transfers from one class to another are not allowed under any circumstance.

Extension of enrollment period for open-enrollment courses only
Every student is eligible for one six-month extension for a fee of $75, which must be received on or before the expiration date. There are no second extensions under any circumstance. If a student has not completed a course within the time frame of the first extension, but he/she wants to complete the course, the student will need to completely re-enroll for the course. There are no refunds for extensions.

Course cancellations

Occasionally, an open-enrollment course offered through Independent Learning is canceled. However, students already enrolled in a canceled open-enrollment course will usually be allowed to complete the course and will not be affected by its cancellation.

Please note: Students will not be able to begin or complete a canceled semester-based course. Semester-based courses that are canceled before the semester begins are the equivalent of in-person courses that are canceled; students will not be able to begin the course and therefore cannot earn academic credit for it.

Course credit

Maximum toward baccalaureate
Credit values indicated in the Independent Learning Course Catalog and in the University’s online schedule are by semester for university courses. Students may earn a maximum of 60 credits through open-enrollment Independent Learning classes to apply toward a baccalaureate degree at the University of Nevada, Reno. Criminal Justice majors may take a maximum of 15 credits in Independent Learning criminal justice courses toward their major.

Graduate credit
Some graduate credit courses are offered through Independent Learning at the University of Nevada, Reno. You may register for any of our graduate courses if you have completed a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution. Students who wish to apply for graduate credit but have not established status with the University’s Graduate School must pay a nonrefundable application fee of $60. If you take a graduate class and do not have an undergraduate degree, your enrollment is null and void and no financial credit or grade can be received for the class. Call Independent Learning for more information, (775) 784-4652.

High school credit
The Nevada Secondary Course of Study document published by the Nevada Department of Education states that, “Credit may be granted for Independent Learning courses taken through a correspondence school which is approved by the State Board of Education and provided the course is equivalent to courses offered in the local school district secondary school program.” A Nevada high school student is allowed to retake a course previously failed on campus but cannot take high school Independent Learning courses to repeat a previously PASSED course in order to improve a grade. Credit is granted by the high school whose requirements you wish to fulfill. It is your responsibility to ascertain before enrollment that the course(s) meet the requirements you wish to satisfy. High school students who wish to take college courses may enroll subject to the approval of the appropriate college or university officials.

Acceptance of credit by other institutions
If you wish to apply credit earned through University of Nevada, Reno Independent Learning courses at another university, be sure to make specific arrangements for acceptance of the credit transfer with that institution before you enroll.

Number of courses at one time

You may enroll in as many courses as you wish. However, if you enroll for 12 credits or more of open-enrollment courses through Independent Learning, you will not be classified as a full-time student during any semester, as you are allowed a full year to complete a course. Enrollment in 12 credits of semester-based courses in one semester does constitute full-time status. You may find enrolling in one course at a time is better for you if you have never taken an Independent Learning course.

Repeat course policy

If you wish to take an Independent Learning course in order to improve your grade from the same University of Nevada, Reno course taken previously on campus, or to take a university course on campus to improve your grade from an Independent Learning course, the course(s) may only be repeated and completed during the next regular semester following the semester in which you were enrolled and in which you completed the first course. This policy applies to 100- and 200-level courses only. The most recent grade earned will be used to calculate your grade-point average. To be eligible, a student must file a Repeat Adjustment Request form in the Office of Admissions and Records and have it approved prior to enrolling in the repeat course.
